a reason why I need the iPhone.

TYPEPONG IPHONE APP #HFT003 IDENT from HypeForType on Vimeo.

HypeForType has created an application for the iPhone called TypePong. This is just another thing to add to my list of Reasons Why I Need an iPhone. This is near the top along with the I Am T-Pain app.

pretty dicey.

Stukenborg, a Brooklyn-based artist, creates these letterpress prints using dice. He lays out the dice, one by one, on a letterpress and rolls ink over them for impression. The extreme care and patience he must have for these projects is out of this world. Very impressive.

Panel Discussion with Award-Winning Independent Documentary Filmmakers

Next Thursday, April 22, at 6 PM, Russell Sage College presents a panel discussion with award-winning independent documentary filmmakers!

Tom Mercer, writer and director of Uncivil Liberties, has a masters degree from Rockefeller College in Public Affairs and studied film at Ithaca College. Mercer co-founded and led a regional chapter of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF). Uncivil Liberties is a documentary set in the near future and shows a United States where the government resorts to heightened surveillance of its own citizens in the name of security, while domestic extremists boldly rebel and take up arms in resistance.

Justin Maine, a director of the documentary So Right So Smart, graduated from Sage Junior College of Albany with a degree in Graphic Design. He pursued his passion of writing, producing and directing independent films. Maine co-founded MagicWig Productions, Inc. in 2002 with Guy Noerr and Don Fisher. So Right So Smart is an award-winning film narrated by Daryl Hannah and is about the movement toward ecological commerce.

Julie Casper Roth, director of The Main, graduated from Smith College and is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has been presented at such venues as MadCat International Women's Film Festival, Athens International Film and Video Festival, and Chicago Reeling Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival. The Main is a film about the first openly gay bar that opened up in 1983 in Superior, Wisconsin. The film also explores social trends that may threaten the continued existence of historically significant queer spaces.

Julia Guther.

I was on Twitter earlier today and Grain Edit, a graphic design inspiration blog, tweeted a piece they did about Julia Guther, a Germany-based illustrator and graphic designer. They mentioned that she does great typography, so I had to check out her site and was deeply impressed with her portfolio.

Julia has worked with many magazines on layouts, and that is what I hope to gain experience in. I was also intrigued by her "links" page. She included links to people that she has done work for, people she admires, and stuff she likes. Once I build a client base, I will be able to include references on my site, too.

Visual Artist: Randy Garber

Sage College of Albany's Opalka Gallery has a new exhibition! Visual artist, Randy Garber, has her work displayed at the gallery until April 18th.

As a Gallery Assistant, I was able to see Randy's work up close and it is definitely beautiful. The images I am sharing are from her newest collection. It is a 3-part installation called "Listening." Here is a closer view of the art on the copper bars.

The Gates.

I'm sure plenty of us remember this piece of work in Central Park in 2005. When I saw these photos, I didn't think much of it. I thought it was interesting and added an extra value to an already beautiful park. I recently watched a documentary on HBO called "The Gates" and it tells the story of Christo and Jean-Claude (Christo's wife), the artists behind the work. I didn't realize there was so much controversy in putting up these pieces. Many people against Christo believed that he would be vandalizing an already beautiful piece of art, Central Park. It was an interesting take on how people view art. The comments people made about it ruining the nature of the park were a little outlandish. I suggest you take a look!

lomogra-riffic & letterpresses.

Lomography sells notebooks! I wasn't aware of that until I saw a tweet they posted on their Twitter account. Like coffee mugs, I'm really like journals. I like to have all of my sketches, ideas, thoughts, and crazy imaginations in one place. They're always a lot of fun to look back at.

Typography Resources/Inspirations

I have also been on a typography rampage. It is my final semester at Sage College of Albany & I have barely discovered their library. I didn't realize they had many books on type and graphic design. I kind of regret not utilizing my privileges sooner! But, anyway, I stumbled upon this blog called We Made This. They're a graphic design studio in London. They have some really neat posts on different designs and typography and letterpresses.
